Midwife. It almost sounds medieval but midwives are truly present-day and they are becoming even more in demand currently. Many women are opting for a home birth and the numbers keep going up. Although this sounds strange to many of us in the U.S., the majority of babies in other parts of the world, including Europe, are delivered at home by a midwife.

Although there are dangers involved, it is important to remember that the mortality rate for infants is much lower in other parts of the world.

It is believed that one of the recent reasons for a marked increase may be due to a DVD that is now available for rental. Titled "The Business of Being Born" it was produced by the actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake.

Brandy Burd, Doula, says, "I think the DVD has something to do with it, as well as women beginning to take control over their education on birth. Instead of just leaving it up to hospital procedure, women are understanding that there are other choices out there... Homebirth, Birthing centers, etc."
